Digga tips - when to rotate picks and change the teeth in your rock auger.

You will at some point need to replace your auger teeth , when is dependent on how often they are used, how they are looked after and the ground conditions they are being used. However, the teeth on your auger should be changed as soon as reasonable wear is noticed and before any pocket wear occurs. The productivity of the auger will decrease as the efficiency of the teeth wears. The outside teeth are travelling the greatest distance as they follow the rotation of the circumference of the augers diameter so they will wear out much quicker than those towards the centre. This is because they have not been travelling as greater distance. The most common sign of wear is to the outer tips of the tooth and this wear will follow the radius of the diameter. If you continue to wear through your outer teeth, you will begin to wear into the pockets and the flights of the auger. Benefits of the Digga cradle hitch

The Digga excavator cradle hitch was designed and manufactured to improve operator and workers safety when manoeuvring around sites whilst also providing a simpler connection to augers and piles. The double pin hitch with drive unit cradle allows the operator to angle the drive up to 90 degrees with greater support given by the cradle so it is easier and more stable when connecting to augers or anchors. The cradle also acts as a support mechanism when manoeuvring around the work site allowing the drive unit to rest on the cradle, stopping it from swinging around over uneven terrain. Designed and manufactured to suit the size of the different drive units available, the hitch can be ordered with loose or fixed pin options and suitable for use with PD3 – PD50 Digga drive models . Drilling expert uses Digga 2-speed auger drives.

Adrian Eagan, aka Baldy has been drilling in one form or another all his working life. Working for one of Queensland largest earthmovers L&D Earthmoving , we wanted to hear what he makes of the Digga drives he puts to work every day.   L&D Earthmoving were established in 1954 and Baldy has been with them for the last 25 years explaining that the company service a mix of commercial and domestic customers “from backyard bobs to major infrastructures – there is virtually no where we can’t service!” Covering all of South East Queensland working in light dusty sands and clay to solid blue metal Baldy really puts his drives through their paces. “I run a few 4.5 or 6 tonne combos for all our everyday work and light duty drilling with the Digga PD3. Steve Hassett, Foundation Technologies Australia business owner and co-founder used his first Digga auger drive unit in January 2017 and since then he’s never looked back; making a commitment to Digga and their Australian manufacturing. ‘Unbreakable’ screw anchor drives the foundation of successful screw pier contractor.

A man who spent years trying to break Digga screw anchor drive units now says he can’t run his business without them. Geoff Taunton runs Gold Coast Screw Piers , a Queensland-based deep foundation system provider servicing more than 200 clients from Coffs Harbour to Cairns. Explaining the history of his business, Geoff told us: "Back when Digga was still in the R&D phase they would give me a new test auger drive unit and tell me to go and break it. Installing screw piers and bored piers involves putting extreme vertical force on the piece of machinery attachment. It’s extremely harsh on the equipment, so it was really an ideal testing ground for the drive units. I would break the drive and tell Digga exactly what I was doing and what pressure it was under when it broke. Rusin Concrete Construction “shattered expectations with excavation speed” using their new Bigfoot XD 1200 Digga trencher.

Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rusin Concrete Construction have been offering a wide range of concrete services for commercial and residential projects for the last 20 years. Earlier this year they were commissioned to excavate grade beams for a multi-unit housing project in Colorado Springs. Project Manager, Tyler Orr explained, “The total structure square footage for the slab on grade was approximately 11612sq m. Grade beams were 300mm wide and 900mm deep below the slab and were the structural component of the project in lieu of typical foundation walls. Digga tips - best practice to increase the life of your wearparts.

The cutting teeth & pilot on any auger are wear parts and you can increase the life of them with the help of Digga's best practice tips. The wear life of a tooth or pilot is undefinable. They will be affected by how often they are used, how they are looked after and the ground conditions they are being used in. For example, in non-fracturable ground where the rock is reduced to a powder; the powder is likely to get caught in and around the cutting head and, acting like a sand paper, will wear away both the pocket and the tooth. In hard ground conditions such as rock over heating within the hole can cause the ground to glaze over. The heat will polish the rock making it harder and have a greater influence on the wear of your cutting heads. To assist with peak performance and longevity of the wear parts there are a few procedures that can be carried out that will help prolong the life of wear parts and increase drilling efficiency. Digga tips - best practice for removing spoil from your auger.

The best way to remove spoil from your auger is to use a forward, stop, forward, stop control pattern until all the spoil is totally removed. When you have been drilling with your auger it may seem like a good idea to alternate the drive from forward to reverse to clear the auger of spoil once lifted out of the hole but, it can cause torque related stress on the drive gearbox which will lead to premature failure. If you have one of our 2-speed drive units try using the high-speed mode to flick the spoil off the auger. When you are drilling in clay you could also try wetting the auger or spray some watered down detergent on the flights before drilling. Specialising in excavations and earthworks, DNA Contract Services say Digga Machinery Attachments "give the best bang for buck!"

Sydney wide DNA Contract Services are a well-established company specialising in excavations, earthworks, haulage and sediment control and trusted by some of Australia’s biggest builders. They were contracted as part of a project with Channel 7’s Better Homes and Gardens to drill piers for a granny flat behind a house in Blacktown, NSW and decided the Digga PD6 Auger Drive unit was the tool for the job. Attached to their 5.5 tonne Hitachi excavator they were never going to have any problems and DNA told us the PD6 drilled through with ease.
